U.S. Implements New Tariff on Moroccan Goods
The United States has announced a new tariff of 12.5% on a range of products imported from Morocco as part of a broader set of trade measures introduced by the Trump administration. This decision is based on a list published by the Office of the United States Trade Representative, which includes several other countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Egypt, Iraq, Algeria, and Libya. In contrast, Jordan has been assigned a lower tariff due to its efforts to enhance product monitoring standards, although the U.S. deemed these measures insufficient.
The U.S. government justified this action following a trade investigation that encompassed 60 trade partners, aiming to ensure that goods exported to the American market are not produced using forced labor. Countries that failed to meet these requirements are now subject to the new tariff of 12.5% on affected goods.
This tariff is set to take effect from midnight New York time on Friday. However, certain products will be exempt from these duties, including diesel, food items, fertilizers, vehicles, metals, and pharmaceuticals, as these are subject to special customs regulations.
