According to Nahuel González, a member of the party and one of the proposal's advocates, Morocco is accused of exploiting migration flows for political leverage. In an interview with Spanish television channel TVE, he stated, "The Moroccan state and its monarchy do not respect human rights and use migrants to exert political pressure." Consequently, the party has called on Spanish sports institutions to reconsider hosting the World Cup alongside Morocco to uphold human rights.
Environmental Concerns and Political Accountability
Meanwhile, in Portugal, the environmental party "Livre" has joined the chorus of voices opposing Morocco's involvement in the World Cup organization. The party has issued a statement demanding that Morocco's hosting rights be revoked due to the ongoing migration crisis affecting the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Jorge Pinto, a spokesperson for the party, emphasized the necessity for a decisive stance, saying, "In light of recent events, it is imperative to make a brave decision. Portugal cannot participate in the joint organization of the World Cup with a country that has shown a lack of competence and trustworthiness."
Recent attempts to cross into Ceuta saw the participation of over 70,000 Moroccans, leading to tragic outcomes as reported by Spanish authorities, with more than 80 individuals losing their lives during the crisis.
