Significant Advancements at the Port of Casablanca
The Port of Casablanca has recently taken a significant leap forward with the arrival of a high-capacity bulk carrier, marking an important milestone in its ongoing modernization efforts. This vessel, chartered by the Cosumar group, is carrying nearly 55,000 tons of raw sugar and measures 200 meters in length. This event signifies the operational enhancements made possible by the strategic deepening of the terminal's quays, which have been upgraded to accommodate larger ships.
Enhanced Infrastructure Leading to Greater Capacity
The introduction of this bulk carrier was facilitated by the new draft of 12 meters at the terminal, which enables it to welcome larger vessels, thereby illustrating a major step forward in the enhancement of Casablanca's port infrastructure. The port operator, Marsa Maroc, reported that the docking of this ship took place under optimal conditions, highlighting the tangible benefits of the investments aimed at boosting the port's competitiveness.
According to Khalid Mansour, the director of the Bulk Business Unit at Marsa Maroc, the port is now open to a new category of large-capacity bulk carriers. With 230 linear meters of quay rehabilitated and deepened to 12 meters, the terminal can currently accommodate vessels carrying up to nearly 60,000 tons of cargo. The goal is to extend this linear capacity to 530 meters by 2028, ultimately allowing the terminal to handle over 8 million tons annually.
The collaboration between Marsa Maroc and Cosumar is also noteworthy, as it illustrates the strategic partnership between port operators and industrial players to optimize logistical and economic efficiency. Anas Jamal Eddine, the Commercial, Marketing, and Supply Chain Director at Cosumar, emphasized that welcoming larger vessels is a crucial factor for enhancing supply chain performance.
This development not only benefits Cosumar but also strengthens the overall attractiveness of the Port of Casablanca, solidifying its position as a major logistics platform that supports commercial exchanges and contributes to national economic development.
