The Public Prosecutor's Office at the Court of Appeal in Tangier has announced significant updates regarding the ongoing judicial investigations into the incident of vote tampering, which had previously led to the arrest of five suspects. On Thursday, the Attorney General detailed that, as part of the continued inquiries, two additional suspects have been apprehended and presented to the Public Prosecutor, coinciding with the execution of necessary technical assessments.
According to information provided in the official statement, initial investigations revealed that one of the suspects, an accountant at a company, was involved in marking a political party's symbol on voting papers at the request of his employer, who is the second suspect in this case. The second suspect was reportedly found, along with two others who possessed bags containing voting papers, inside an apartment at a hotel where they marked the papers with a political party's symbol.
The Public Prosecutor's Office noted that recovering surveillance footage from the hotel, which had been intentionally erased, allowed for the documentation of the second suspect's presence alongside his accountant and two other individuals, currently held in custody, within the apartment until they all exited together, including the suspect who had taken the voting papers from the office and returned them.
Furthermore, the surveillance recordings indicated that the same two bags that were later seized at the voting offices were involved in this case. The report also highlighted that the second suspect was present during the process of bringing in the voting papers and marking them with a political party's symbol.
In a related context, the results of the technical analysis conducted on the second suspect's phone, as disclosed by the Public Prosecutor's Office, revealed multiple phone calls made before and on the day of the election with two of the suspects currently in custody related to the same case.
Based on the findings of these investigations, the Public Prosecutor has decided to file a request for an investigation against the involved parties while in provisional detention, under suspicion of committing acts related to violations of electoral processes and participation in forgery.
The Attorney General reiterated that the Public Prosecutor's Office will continue to monitor the investigation procedures and submit the necessary requests, ensuring strict adherence to the law and thorough examination of all circumstances surrounding this case.
