New Global Players' Union AIF Launched to Challenge FIFPro's Dominance

The Emergence of the International Association of Footballers

A significant shift in the landscape of football representation has emerged with the launch of the International Association of Footballers (AIF), a new global players' union aimed at rivaling the established FIFPro. Headed by David Aganzo, the president of Spain’s Asociación de Footballistas Españoles (AFE), the AIF claims to represent over 30,000 players worldwide. The launch, which took place in Madrid, saw the attendance of players' unions from Brazil, Mexico, and Switzerland, signaling a united front among football associations at a pivotal moment when FIFPro is embroiled in disputes with FIFA regarding player welfare and representation.

FIFPro's Ongoing Disputes and AIF's Objectives

The conflict between FIFPro, which has represented over 60,000 footballers since the 1960s, and FIFA has been escalating, particularly after the European branch of FIFPro lodged a complaint against FIFA in 2024 over perceived inadequacies in consultation regarding the international football calendar. In a tumultuous exchange, FIFA accused FIFPro of lacking transparency and challenged the union to disclose its statutes and financial reports. Despite publishing its statutes, FIFPro's financial documents remain behind a paywall, complicating the transparency issue further.

Amidst these tensions, Aganzo has positioned the AIF as a fresh alternative dedicated to protecting players' interests and facilitating direct communication with international bodies. During the launch event, Aganzo emphasized the AIF's commitment to safeguarding players' rights, indicating that numerous unions were already poised to join this new initiative. However, FIFPro swiftly dismissed the AIF's legitimacy, labeling it as a speculative endeavor lacking the mandate to represent professional footballers globally. The ongoing rivalry between FIFPro and FIFA adds another layer of complexity to the situation, with allegations of blackmail and a lack of genuine concern for player welfare being exchanged between the two organizations.
