New Jersey to Serve as a Hub for Morocco During the World Cup
In an exciting development for soccer enthusiasts and local communities alike, New Jersey has been selected to host Morocco’s national soccer team during the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup. This decision is poised to draw international attention and foster significant economic impact in Somerset County. On May 5, Governor Mikie Sherrill made the announcement alongside Moroccan Ambassador Youssef Amrani and CEO of the FIFA World Cup 2026 NY/NJ Host Committee, Alex Lasry. The Pingry School in Basking Ridge has been designated as the base for Morocco’s tournament operations, highlighting the state’s vital role in the global sporting event.
Governor Sherrill expressed the importance of this moment, stating, “This is a major moment for New Jersey. We’re welcoming the world — and highlighting our communities on a global stage.” Morocco is set to play against Brazil at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on June 13, a match that promises to be one of the tournament's standout group-stage encounters.
Enhanced Facilities and Cultural Connections
The Pingry School's campus, which previously served as a training site during the 1994 World Cup, has recently undergone significant upgrades. These enhancements include the establishment of two international-standard grass fields and expanded athletic facilities designed to cater to elite competition. Officials have remarked that the selection of this site reflects not only the region’s robust infrastructure but also its cultural connections, as New Jersey is home to nearly 10,000 residents of Moroccan descent.
Ambassador Amrani emphasized the opportunity this collaboration presents, stating, “Football has a unique power to bring people together. We look forward to building lasting connections throughout this journey.” In addition to Morocco, it is anticipated that three other national teams will also establish their training bases in New Jersey, with operations planned at locations including Morris Township, Stockton University, and Rutgers University. Further announcements regarding these teams are expected in the coming weeks, further solidifying New Jersey's position as a key player in this global sporting event.
