Modernizing Morocco's Vehicle Registration System
In a significant move to enhance and standardize the vehicle registration process, the Moroccan Ministry of Equipment and Transport has announced new reforms published in the official bulletin No. 7531 dated Safar 19, 1448 (August 3, 2026). These changes aim to modernize the standards surrounding vehicle registration plates, ensuring a more coherent and efficient system.
According to Article 21 of the new regulations, the vehicle registration number will consist of three segments. The first segment will denote the registration prefecture or province code, followed by a serial number that includes an Arabic letter and its Latin equivalent. The final segment will be an order number ranging from 1 to 99,999. Notably, the transition to the next series occurs automatically upon reaching the maximum order number, thereby facilitating a seamless update process.
These reforms also address the relationship between the vehicle registration system and the territorial and administrative changes within the Kingdom. Any alterations, such as the creation or abolition of prefectures, will have immediate regulatory impacts. For instance, a new prefecture will be assigned a series code, while the series associated with any abolished prefecture will be terminated without delay.
To accommodate vehicles operating internationally, the decree specifies that the use of old registration plates will be phased out by the end of December 2026. However, vehicles that fall under the local series currently in use are permitted to retain their plates until the first change of ownership occurs. This thoughtful approach ensures that both existing vehicle owners and prospective buyers will experience a smooth transition amidst the regulatory changes.
