Morocco's National Road Safety Agency Unveils Standardized Registration Plates
The National Road Safety Agency of Morocco, known as "NARSA," has announced the implementation of a new unified model for vehicle registration plates, applicable both domestically and internationally. This initiative aims to standardize vehicle registration processes and address practical challenges linked to existing regulatory frameworks governing these plates, particularly during international travel.
In an official statement, the agency revealed that on August 3, a decree from the Minister of Transport and Logistics, numbered 640.26, was published. This decree amends the earlier decision (2711.10) issued on September 29, 2010, regarding the registration of motor vehicles and trailers, and it was published in the official gazette number 7531.
The new regulation introduces stipulations concerning the uniformity of the design and dimensions of the registration plate to be used within Morocco and abroad. This change is expected to eliminate practical issues arising from the discrepancies between the registration plate designs used internationally and those in domestic use.
Regarding the registration plates currently in use before the new decree takes effect, the agency confirmed that they may continue to be used for vehicles registered under the standard series that employ registration plates without Latin letters and comply with Moroccan regulations until the first ownership transfer occurs.
For motor vehicles registered under the standard series, which are utilized for international travel and carry registration plates with Latin letters along with a distinct marker denoting Morocco (MA) separated from the plate, the agency stated that the existing plates will remain valid until December 31, 2026. After this date, they will need to be replaced with the new unified model.
The announcement emphasized that, starting from the publication date of the decree, the new unified model will be adopted for every transaction involving the registration of a newly purchased vehicle in Morocco or any vehicle imported from abroad, whether new or used.
In this regard, the National Road Safety Agency has urged all manufacturers of vehicle registration plates to comply with the provisions of decree number 640.26 and to ensure that the plates are produced in strict adherence to the specified design and dimensions outlined in the regulation.
