Serious Concerns Raised Over Building Safety in Morocco

The Moroccan Organization for Human Rights has issued a strong warning regarding the alarming frequency of residential building collapses in cities such as Fes and other Moroccan locales. The organization emphasized that these incidents should not be dismissed as isolated events; rather, they indicate significant and troubling deficiencies in the construction sector. These concerns are particularly pronounced regarding buildings that are at risk of collapse.

In an official statement, the organization posed critical questions regarding the adherence to legal and technical standards during the building permit process. It highlighted potential negligence in allowing constructions that fail to meet safety criteria, which represents a direct violation of fundamental human rights, particularly the right to life and physical safety.

In light of the investigation initiated by the Public Prosecutor's Office concerning the recent collapse of a building in "Ain Naqbi" in Fes, the organization underscored the necessity for a thorough and timely inquiry. It stressed that responsibilities must be determined in accordance with the constitutional principle that links accountability to responsibility, and that legal consequences should be enforced as dictated by law.

Furthermore, the rights group urged authorities and city officials in Fes to adopt a proactive and comprehensive approach to address this troubling situation, which undermines the dignity of residents. They called for immediate action targeting all at-risk neighborhoods, including Al-Hassani, Jnanaat, Ain Naqbi, and Bourniyat, as well as Zone 45 and other vulnerable areas.
