Nigeria and Morocco Set to Sign $25 Billion Gas Pipeline Agreement

Ambitious Plans for the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline

The anticipated intergovernmental agreement between Nigeria and Morocco regarding the monumental $25 billion gas pipeline is poised for signing this year, as confirmed by the head of Morocco’s hydrocarbons and mining agency. This ambitious project, aptly named the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline, aims to span an impressive 6,900 kilometers (4,200 miles) and will employ a hybrid route that combines both offshore and onshore segments.

Boasting a maximum capacity of 30 billion cubic meters, the pipeline is designed to not only fulfill Morocco's energy needs but also facilitate gas exports to Europe. According to an agency representative's statements to Reuters, the initial phases of the pipeline, which will connect Morocco to significant gas fields located in Mauritania and Senegal, are projected to commence operations by 2031. Furthermore, the project's later phases are set to link Ghana to Côte d’Ivoire, ultimately culminating in a final segment that will connect Ghana to Nigeria’s extensive gas fields. Although the specifics regarding funding have yet to be finalized, the implications of this project are monumental for energy logistics in the region.
