Controversy Surrounds Sheikh Gumi and Allegations of Abduction
A Nigerian man, Nasiru Musa Idris, has raised serious allegations against prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, claiming that Gumi has unlawfully kept his Moroccan wife away from him for approximately 11 months. Idris, who sought Gumi's counsel for his wife, asserts that the cleric has mistreated her during this time. Idris further elaborated on the nature of his marriage, revealing that he had sought his wife's hand in marriage in Morocco, with all necessary approvals from the embassy and her family. He alleged that Gumi’s interference began when the cleric requested he obtain a new marriage certificate from a Sharia Court, despite having already secured relevant documents in both Morocco and Nigeria. The dispute escalated as Idris claimed that Gumi acted unilaterally by approaching the court for this certificate without his consent. He has presented various documents supporting the legitimacy of his marriage, including those from the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian embassy in Morocco, as well as a police character report.
