Flamingos Set for World Cup Qualifying Challenge
Head Coach Akeem Busari has officially summoned 36 talented players to join the training camp as Nigeria's U17 girls, affectionately known as the Flamingos, gear up for the second round of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers. This strategic move aligns with the Nigeria Football Federation's recent decision to appoint a new backroom team aimed at bolstering Busari's efforts ahead of these critical matches.
The Flamingos, who proudly secured the bronze medal at the 2022 tournament, are poised to take on the victor of the first-round encounter between Niger Republic and Guinea. The first leg of this matchup will take place in Niger Republic this weekend, with the return leg set for the following weekend in Conakry. The winner of this preliminary round will face Nigeria in the second round, with the initial leg scheduled for the weekend of May 22-24, and the Flamingos will host the return leg on May 30.
Busari's comprehensive player selection comprises five goalkeepers, 10 defenders, 13 midfielders, and eight forwards, marking a significant beginning for him after the departure of former coach Bankole Olowookere. The roster includes players from various clubs, showcasing a mix of experience and youth. Notable inclusions are Dorathy Noel Ndaks from Nasarawa Amazons and Sylvia Echefu from Bayelsa Queens, among others, all eager to contribute to the team's success.
A Revamped Coaching Staff to Support the Flamingos
In a noteworthy development, the Nigeria Football Federation has also approved the appointment of assistant coaches to enhance the Flamingos' technical support. Former international defender Joy Jegede-Idakwo has been appointed as the first assistant coach, bringing her vast experience as a former captain of the Falconets and a distinguished career with the Super Falcons. Aighewi Omodiaghe will serve as the second assistant coach, having previously represented Nigeria at the inaugural FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand in 2008. Additionally, ex-international Kola Ige has been designated as the goalkeepers’ trainer, further enriching the team’s coaching dynamic.
With the ambition to qualify for the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, scheduled to be held in Morocco from October 17 to November 7, the Flamingos are gearing up for a formidable challenge. With a newly structured technical crew and a fresh squad, Coach Busari is determined to lead the team beyond their impressive third-place finish in the last tournament, setting the stage for another exciting global campaign.
