OCP Green Energy Advances Renewable Energy Storage Solutions
On September 15, 2026, the OCP Group announced a significant milestone achieved by its subsidiary, OCP Green Energy, which specializes in renewable energy production and storage. The company has successfully constructed its first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the mining site of Ben Guerir. This groundbreaking system marks the beginning of a large-scale rollout of battery storage technology, following the recent activation of the first phase of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity, which totals an impressive 202 megawatts. This power is distributed across various solar plants, including 67 megawatts at Ben Guerir, 30 megawatts at Foum Tizig, and 105 megawatts at Oulad Faris in Khouribga.
Enhancing Energy Reliability and Efficiency
The integration of the BESS is a pivotal step for OCP Green Energy as it expands its capabilities beyond solar electricity production to encompass energy storage and dispatching. This advancement allows the company to store excess solar energy generated during the day for use during peak demand periods, providing a consistent power supply to its industrial and mining facilities. In late 2025, OCP Green Energy secured a contract with technology provider ENVISION to supply and operate the new storage system, utilizing Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) technology. This decision was made after a thorough evaluation of specialized contractors, ensuring the project met all necessary qualifications.
Notably, the procurement of equipment occurred in the fourth quarter of 2025, capitalizing on favorable market conditions before supply chain disruptions arose. This strategic timing allowed OCP Green Energy to benefit from some of the lowest costs available in the market. The exceptional nature of the project, combined with its pioneering role in new technologies and energy transformation, enabled the company to obtain preferential financing terms, reflecting the confidence of international partners in the initiative. The BESS system boasts a capacity of 25 megawatts and 125 megawatt-hours, which translates to five hours of storage, directly linked to the existing photovoltaic station at the Ben Guerir site.
This innovative system is designed to mitigate the volatility associated with solar energy production, enhance the continuity of electrical supply to industrial facilities, and improve the overall flexibility of the electrical system. It will operate on a daily charge and discharge cycle, with a lifespan of up to 25 years, and the LFP technology has been specifically chosen for its safety, thermal stability, and sustainability. The investment, valued at approximately 170 million dirhams, has enabled the acquisition of essential equipment and batteries for the BESS, as well as the completion of all integration work, including civil and electrical engineering tasks—entirely executed by Moroccan professionals.
The project is also supported by a $20 million financing package from the Clean Technology Fund (CTF), a program backed by the African Development Bank, primarily aimed at developing innovative energy storage solutions from renewable sources. Following the installation of all batteries, conversion equipment, and control systems, OCP Green Energy has initiated the battery system's operation in preparation for performance testing in the coming weeks, paving the way for actual exploitation.
Once operational, this system will enable a better alignment between solar energy availability and the energy needs of industrial facilities. By storing electricity during peak photovoltaic production and redistributing it during high-demand hours, the BESS will significantly enhance the reliability and continuity of renewable energy supply while reducing the electricity bill for OCP's industrial site by an estimated 25% during peak times. Omar Qadir, the General Manager of OCP Green Energy, emphasized that "as announced last year with the launch of our initial solar PV projects, energy storage is a natural extension of our energy strategy, enabling us to reconcile the variable production of renewable energies with the constant demands of our industrial platforms while bolstering the reliability of our energy supplies."
Additionally, he stated that "beyond meeting the needs of OCP, this technology opens avenues for smoothly integrating renewable energy into the national power grid, contributing to accelerating Morocco's energy transition by adding greater flexibility and adaptability to the electrical network." This new development aligns with OCP Green Energy's roadmap, which aims to cover all electrical needs of the group through clean energy sources, thus making renewable energy a cornerstone for competitiveness, flexibility, and OCP's industrial transformation while supporting its decarbonization journey.
Simultaneously, the OCP Group is collaborating with Mohammed VI Polytechnic University to develop LFP materials derived from phosphoric acid, leveraging the group's expertise in phosphates. Research and development efforts have yielded high-performance LFP materials and generated proprietary intellectual property, particularly concerning production processes and material properties. These innovations are now entering a scaling phase in preparation for future manufacturing, reflecting OCP's ambition to develop a comprehensive lithium-ion battery ecosystem in Morocco using lithium iron phosphate.
