OCP Green Energy Advances Renewable Initiatives with New Battery Storage System
In a significant stride towards renewable energy integration, OCP Green Energy has successfully installed a 25MW/125MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Benguerir, Morocco. Announced on September 14, this groundbreaking project marks the first large-scale lithium iron phosphate (LFP) BESS installation in North Africa. The system has completed construction and is currently in the commissioning phase, promising to enhance the renewable energy capabilities of OCP Group, the parent company operating in the region's phosphate mining sector.
Located within an open-pit phosphate mining complex in central Morocco, the BESS is strategically designed to support OCP Group’s industrial and mining operations by utilizing renewable energy sources. The project will store solar energy during daylight hours, ensuring a continuous power supply for the company's operations, which are increasingly shifting towards sustainable energy sources.
Strategic Investment and Future Goals
OCP Green Energy's investment in the battery storage system is part of a larger commitment by OCP Group to advance its renewable energy initiatives. This investment aligns with a US$13 billion program aimed at expanding fertilizer production and enhancing renewable energy deployment from 2023 to 2027. The company has pledged to operate all its industrial facilities using green energy by 2027, targeting an impressive 5GW of renewable generation capacity. By 2032, OCP aims to escalate its renewable energy generation to at least 13GW, reflecting a robust commitment to sustainable development.
The battery storage system received support from the Chinese company Envision, which provided the necessary equipment through contracts established in late 2025. This timing was strategic, as it occurred before the onset of challenges in the global battery storage supply chains. The project is complemented by OCP Group’s previous renewable investments, including a 202MWp portfolio of solar PV plants launched in December 2025, with the Oulad Farès plant being Morocco’s largest PV installation at 105MWp.
OCP Group invested nearly MAD170 million (approximately US$17.98 million) into the BESS and its integration, bolstered by an additional US$20 million from the African Development Bank’s Clean Technology Fund. Furthermore, the African Development Bank has extended a credit guarantee of up to €450 million (around US$519.77 million) to support OCP Group's Green Investment Programme, underscoring the importance of collaborative financial efforts in advancing renewable energy projects in the region.
In addition to these developments, the African Development Bank has approved a US$100 million loan for Gotion Power Morocco, a subsidiary of Gotion High-Tech, aimed at establishing a comprehensive LFP battery gigafactory. This factory, located in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra Free Trade Zone, will produce battery cells and packs for electric vehicles, with an initial capacity of 10GWh, expandable to 100GWh, demonstrating the growing momentum of renewable energy initiatives across North Africa.
