Omar Artan: FIFA to Compensate World Cup Referee Despite U.S. Entry Denial

FIFA's Commitment to Referee Compensation

Omar Artan, a renowned referee from Somalia, has made headlines as he will receive his full tournament fee from FIFA despite being denied entry into the United States for the ongoing World Cup. According to a source familiar with the situation, who wished to remain anonymous, Artan's compensation will remain intact even though he has not officiated any matches during the nearly six-week-long event. The exact amount of the fee is expected to be determined once the tournament concludes next month.

Challenges Faced by Omar Artan

Artan has been recognized as one of the top officials in soccer, having earned the title of Africa's best male referee in 2025. However, his journey took an unexpected turn upon arriving at Miami International Airport from Istanbul, where U.S. Customs and Border Protection deemed him “inadmissible due to vetting concerns.” It’s notable that he had previously been issued a visa by the Somalia Embassy in Kenya, which facilitated his travel arrangements to join fellow World Cup referees for training in Miami.

FIFA clarified that it does not influence immigration decisions, emphasizing that the host government has the ultimate authority in determining entry eligibility. Consequently, Artan was unable to participate in both training and officiating duties during this prestigious tournament. Upon his return to Somalia, he received a warm welcome from supporters and expressed his determination to be part of the next World Cup, which is set to take place in 2030 across Morocco, Portugal, and Spain. Additionally, he has been appointed to officiate the UEFA Super Cup in August, highlighting his continued prominence in the sport.
