Omar El Hilali Voices Disappointment Over Coach Departure from Atlas Lions

Omar El Hilali's Reaction to Coaching Changes in Moroccan Football

Omar El Hilali, the talented Moroccan international and crucial player for Espanyol, has openly shared his feelings of disappointment following the recent departure of coach Walid Regragui from the Moroccan national team, also known as the Atlas Lions. The young defender, who is only 22 years old, has found himself left out of the squad selected by the new coach, Mohamed Wahbi. This exclusion marks his third consecutive omission from the national team, heightening concerns for El Hilali as the FIFA World Cup approaches.

In a recent interview with Sport, where his comments were highlighted by Africa Foot, El Hilali expressed his sentiments regarding the situation. "I had a good relationship with El-Rakraki, and we were in constant contact; when he didn’t call me up, he explained the reason to me," he stated. His disappointment was palpable as he continued, "I was very saddened by El-Rakraki’s departure. Then the new coach arrived. It’s true that I wasn’t on the final squad list, but football is all about performance." This reflection underscores the competitive nature of professional football, where selection is often dictated by current form and strategy.

Looking toward the future, El Hilali remains optimistic about the direction of the national team. He expressed enthusiasm regarding the potential appointment of the legendary Xavi as the head coach of the Atlas Lions following the World Cup. "Xavi is a legend, and many players would welcome him as coach of the Moroccan national team," he remarked, recognizing the impact a figure like Xavi could have on the squad. However, he also acknowledged the value of having a domestic coach with a deep understanding of Moroccan football, showing his respect for the current coaching structure led by Mohamed Wahbi. "Now Mohamed Wahbi is in charge, and he is also very capable. I hope he does well at the World Cup," he concluded, demonstrating his support for the new leadership during this pivotal time for Moroccan football.
