ONCF Achieves Historic MAD 5 Billion Revenue Milestone with 55.6 Million Passengers

ONCF's Record-Breaking Financial Performance in 2025

In a remarkable achievement, Morocco's national railway operator, ONCF, has surpassed the MAD 5 billion (approximately $500 million) revenue threshold for the first time in its history, marking a significant milestone in 2025. The impressive financial performance can be attributed to substantial growth across its various sectors, including passenger transport, freight services, and phosphate transportation. The figures were disclosed during a board meeting held in Rabat on April 9, chaired by Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh.

During the past year, ONCF recorded a staggering 55.6 million travelers, which generated MAD 2.9 billion (about $290 million) in revenue, reflecting a 5% increase compared to the previous year. This growth was primarily driven by an enhanced mobility offer and improved accessibility across the railway network. Notably, the Al Boraq high-speed train service, which is Africa's first high-speed rail, celebrated its seventh anniversary in 2025 by carrying 5.6 million passengers, yielding MAD 848 million (approximately $84.8 million) in revenue, a 3% increase from 2024.

Investment and Sustainability Initiatives

In addition to passenger services, ONCF has made significant strides in freight operations, handling 9 million tons of goods, with revenues from this segment reaching MAD 744 million ($74.4 million), marking a 6% increase year-on-year. The phosphate transport division experienced an even more pronounced rebound, with volumes exceeding 14.2 million tons, a substantial jump of over 12%. This segment alone generated MAD 1.245 billion ($124.5 million) in revenue, a notable 10% rise.

The year 2025 also saw ONCF intensifying its investment efforts, particularly in civil engineering projects related to the Kenitra-Marrakech high-speed rail line, which commenced and accelerated throughout the year. The operator secured three major contracts for the acquisition of 168 new-generation trainsets to accommodate increasing traffic demands. Furthermore, ONCF has been actively pursuing environmental sustainability, reporting a 26% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions based on its 2024 carbon footprint assessment. The organization has established a comprehensive Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy aimed at 2030 to enhance its sustainability initiatives.

Reflecting on the achievements and future ambitions of ONCF, Director General Mohamed Rabie Khlie emphasized the positive operational results and the company's ability to absorb infrastructure depreciation charges fully. This optimistic outlook bodes well for ONCF as it continues to drive forward its ambitious rail investment program, which totals MAD 96 billion ($9.6 billion), a plan initiated by King Mohammed VI in April 2025. Overall, ONCF's record revenue and continued commitment to enhancing transport services and sustainability make it a pivotal player in Morocco's economic landscape.
