Oued Bouskoura Flood Protection Initiatives Progress

The flood protection works for the Oued Bouskoura have successfully advanced through various stages, with the third and final phase recently approved by project partners. According to Abdelkarim El Maliki, the president of the local commune, flood risks are no longer a significant threat, although pollution stemming from industrial areas in Bouskoura and Ouled Saleh continues to pose challenges. This project, aimed at safeguarding the Oued Bouskoura in the Nouaceur province, demonstrates significant progress, as highlighted by El Maliki.

This initiative involves substantial investments and operates under an agreement that encompasses multiple stakeholders, including the Fund for Natural Disaster Mitigation, under the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Equipment and Water, the Casablanca-Settat Region, the Bouregreg and Chaouia Hydraulic Basin Agency, and the Bouskoura commune. The financing for the project is structured in three phases, with the first phase completed at approximately 70% and the second phase already realized. The partners have now validated the third phase, marking it as the final stage of this essential project.

Mitigating Flood Risks While Addressing Pollution

The project envisions a comprehensive arrangement that facilitates rainwater drainage effectively, thereby preventing the flooding issues that previously afflicted the Oued Bouskoura. These overflows had not only impacted the riverbanks but also affected neighboring areas, including the city of Casablanca. El Maliki asserts that the flooding issue has been resolved; however, there remains a pressing concern regarding pollution from the industrial zones in the Nouaceur province, particularly from the communes of Bouskoura and Ouled Saleh. This ongoing environmental challenge underscores the need for continued vigilance and action to ensure the health and safety of the local communities.
