Outrage in Morocco Over Global Sumud Flotilla's Controversial Video

Controversy Erupts Over Flotilla's Stance on Sahara Dispute

A promotional video released by the Global Sumud Flotilla platform has ignited significant outrage in Morocco, as it appears to endorse the Polisario Front's perspective on the contentious Sahara dispute. Many observers view this stance as a stark deviation from the initial mission of the initiative, which was primarily focused on humanitarian efforts. The platform's latest endeavor aims to draw parallels between the Palestinian struggle and the Sahara conflict, announcing a new documentary series titled "One Struggle: Western Sahara." In this series, the video characterizes the Sahara as a territory under Moroccan control, allegedly backed by influential governments, while portraying the Polisario Front as a legitimate "Sahrawi liberation movement." It claims that the Sahrawis' quest for independence persists despite the International Court of Justice's dismissal of Moroccan and Mauritanian claims to the territory.

Political Response and Calls for Accountability

The Justice and Development Party (PJD) responded vehemently to the video, condemning it for containing what they described as "grave misrepresentations regarding the Moroccan Sahara." They emphasized that the flotilla was initially formed by activists from various countries with the primary mission of alleviating the blockade on Gaza, and thus should not have ventured into unrelated political matters. The PJD's General Secretariat characterized the video as a "serious mistake and a dangerous breach" that could jeopardize the flotilla's support among Moroccans. They reiterated that the historical and legal facts surrounding Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara are well-established and supported by UN Security Council resolutions, underscoring a national consensus on the issue. The party further warned that the flotilla's actions might alienate it from the Moroccan public, as the Sahara matter is intricately tied to the Kingdom's national unity and territorial integrity. In this context, they accused external actors of manipulating the situation to foster separatism and instability within the region.

Additionally, the Moroccan Initiative for Support and Advocacy, an independent civil organization that aligns with Islamic values and advocates for the Palestinian cause, condemned the content released by the Global Sumud Flotilla, labeling it an affront to Morocco's territorial integrity. They denounced what they termed a "dangerous deviation" from the humanitarian mission of the initiative and called for an investigation to hold those responsible accountable. The organization expressed concern that the plight of Gaza's residents was being exploited to further agendas of division and separatism, which could undermine the unity of efforts aimed at alleviating the blockade on Gaza. Aziz Hennawi, the secretary-general of the Moroccan Observatory Against Normalization, echoed these sentiments, asserting that the initiative's actions were detrimental to the flotilla's original objectives and questioning whether the Sahara issue fell within its scope. He criticized the presence of "Zionist fingerprints" in the affair, suggesting that the narrative surrounding the Sahara was being employed to create discord among participants and compromise future humanitarian initiatives.
