PAM Secures Top Position in Recent Elections

In a significant turn of events for Moroccan politics, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), under the leadership of Fouzi Lekjaa since July 25, 2023, has claimed victory in the legislative elections held on September 23, 2023. Other parties have also made their mark, with the Popular Movement (MP) securing 29 seats, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) obtaining 26 seats, and the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) earning 19 seats. Smaller parties like the Democratic Social Movement (MDS) and the Left Alliance (ALN) each received 8 seats, while the Democratic Forces Front (FFD) and the Equity and Reform Party (PER) secured 2 seats each. The New Democrats Party and the Union for Democracy and Development (UDD) each claimed 1 seat.

Despite the overall positive outcome for PAM, the voter turnout was recorded at a mere 38.02%, a noticeable drop from previous elections where participation rates exceeded 50%. This decline raises concerns about voter engagement and the effectiveness of the electoral process in Morocco. Abdelouafi Laftit assured the public that the electoral process was conducted without major incidents, apart from a few isolated events that did not significantly affect the overall proceedings.

According to Article 47 of the Moroccan constitution, the King selects the head of government from the winning party's members.
