Patrice Motsepe Addresses Controversy Surrounding Africa Cup Title Revocation
Patrice Motsepe, the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has firmly rejected allegations of corruption following the controversial decision to revoke Senegal's Africa Cup title. In a video message shared on the organization's website, Motsepe stated, "No single country in Africa will be favored or treated preferentially over another on the continent." He emphasized the seriousness with which CAF regards the events that transpired during the final held in Morocco.
During the closing moments of the match, chaos erupted both on the field and in the stands after a penalty was awarded. In response to what they deemed an unjust situation, nearly the entire Senegalese team left the pitch in protest, only to return later. Consequently, CAF's appeals court ruled to rescind Senegal's victory over Morocco (1-0 after extra time) and awarded the title to Morocco, the host nation of the tournament.
In light of this decision, the Senegalese government has called for corruption investigations against CAF and has announced plans to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Motsepe expressed his respect for any decision made at the highest levels of governance, saying, "We will respect the decision that is made at the highest level." He also noted that the incidents surrounding the January final represent a setback for African football.
Motsepe highlighted the importance of maintaining integrity, respect, and ethical standards in football, asserting that the events surrounding the final undermine the significant progress CAF has made over the years to ensure the credibility of football competitions. He remarked, "The ongoing suspicions are rooted in a historical issue, something that has existed for many, many years, and we continuously address it because it is crucial." The appeals court's decision was based on Article 82 of the Africa Cup regulations, which stated that Senegal's exit from the field constituted a forfeiture of the match against Morocco, resulting in a score adjustment to 3-0 in favor of Morocco.
