Pep Guardiola Suspended for Two Consecutive Matches with Manchester City

Pep Guardiola's Suspension and Its Impact on Manchester City

Pep Guardiola, the head coach of Manchester City, will be sidelined for two consecutive matches after receiving his sixth yellow card of the season. This disciplinary action followed his team’s comfortable 3-1 victory over Newcastle United on March 7, 2026, which secured their place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. According to the British news agency PA Media, Guardiola engaged in a discussion with fourth official Lewis Smith along the sidelines at St. James' Park after a tackle by Newcastle's Kieran Trippier on City's winger, Jeremy Doku. The incident prompted match referee Sam Barrott to issue a yellow card to Guardiola.

The suspension means that Guardiola will miss the upcoming Premier League match against West Ham United, as well as the crucial quarter-final clash in the FA Cup. Despite this setback, the decision did not dampen the Spaniard's spirits following his team's impressive win, which involved making ten changes to the starting lineup compared to their previous match, a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest.

In a light-hearted remark, Guardiola stated, "I’ll tell you something; we have all the records in this country, all of them, despite everything. We now have the record for the number of yellow cards received by coaches as well; I wanted all the records, and now I have them." At 55 years old, he humorously noted his two-match suspension, saying, "I’ll be absent, and I’ll go on vacation. There are things I can’t understand after ten years of experience." He concluded his remarks by expressing his support for Doku and the entire team, emphasizing the need to review the incident thoroughly.

Currently, Manchester City sits second in the Premier League standings with 60 points, trailing leaders Arsenal by seven points after the latter's draw against Nottingham Forest in matchday 29 of the Premier League.
