This innovative platform seeks to provide essential services and information related to scientific research, funding opportunities, and academic collaboration, catering specifically to the challenges faced by students and emerging researchers in their academic journeys.
The introduction of this platform comes at a crucial time when many doctoral students and young researchers encounter significant hurdles, including issues related to funding, academic supervision, and access to vital databases and information regarding grants, conferences, and research opportunities. According to data underlying this initiative, over 40,000 doctoral researchers are registered in Morocco for the 2023-2024 academic year. Additionally, concerns about high dropout rates from doctoral programs have been echoed by the former Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, Abdellatif Miraoui, who indicated that up to 90% of students abandon their doctoral theses.
PhiDoc recognizes that the challenges of scientific research extend beyond funding and supervision; they also encompass timely access to information. Often, announcements regarding grants, conferences, and academic opportunities are disseminated through various channels, including mailing lists, laboratories, and social networks, leading to disparities in researchers' ability to benefit from these resources.
The concept of the platform stemmed from a personal experience of its founder, Osama Al-Assiri, who, during his doctoral studies in management science at Cadi Ayyad University, missed an Erasmus program opportunity by just one day after the application deadline. This motivated him to create a centralized system to compile various calls and opportunities he found, which he shared with his colleagues in the lab. This experience ultimately evolved into a digital project designed to consolidate the essential services that researchers require throughout their academic paths into a single space.
As explained by the developers, the platform allows users to track the stages of their doctoral thesis preparation according to specific objectives and milestones, while also receiving updates on funding opportunities and conferences relevant to their research fields and professional stages. Additionally, it provides a directory for Moroccan researchers, both domestically and internationally, aiming to facilitate networking and academic collaboration, as well as offering assistance with methodological and scientific writing inquiries.
The platform also includes a feature that enables researchers conducting quantitative or qualitative studies to seek participants for their research through a system based on reciprocal participation among members of the research community. In a further commitment to academic development, PhiDoc has established a mentorship program where professors and researchers, including members of the Moroccan scientific diaspora, can register as mentors and connect with doctoral students and early-career researchers, with the ability to track mentorship sessions through the platform.
The project team emphasizes the importance of enhancing communication among researchers both within Morocco and abroad, leveraging the expertise of Moroccan scholars in various international universities and research institutions. The choice of September 16 for the official platform launch coincides with the International Day of Science, Technology, and Innovation for Sustainable Development in the Global South, as recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in 2024. However, the PhiDoc team clarifies that this date does not imply any affiliation, support, or partnership with the United Nations.
Initially launched in Morocco, the platform aims to expand its services to other African countries and subsequently to the Middle East and North Africa. The project's vision for expansion is predicated on the significant disparities in research and development spending among nations. According to the United Nations, higher-income countries account for the majority of global research and development expenditures, while low-income countries receive a disproportionately small share.
Osama Al-Assiri asserts that the issue PhiDoc seeks to address is not a lack of talent but rather the inadequacies in the infrastructure connecting researchers to the available information and opportunities. The platform is anticipated to be accessible soon, providing a crucial resource for academic and research development.
