Significant Police Action at Rheinfelden-Autobahn Border Crossing
In a significant development, the Rheinfelden-Autobahn border crossing between Germany and Switzerland has been completely shut down in both directions due to a major police operation. According to a spokesperson from the Federal Police in Weil am Rhein, traffic has been redirected to alternate border crossings as authorities investigate a potential criminal matter linked to a vehicle entering Switzerland from Germany.
Reports indicate that German bomb disposal experts are en route to the scene to assist local authorities. The Federal Police is providing support with a specialized explosives team in light of the situation that unfolded earlier today.
A suspicious vehicle was stopped for inspection shortly before 1 PM as it crossed from Germany into Switzerland. Swiss authorities discovered that there was a criminal suspicion against the registered owner of the vehicle, based on information from the Baden-Württemberg State Police that had been integrated into the cross-border notification and search system of the Schengen States.
In a precautionary measure, both directions of the A861 on the German side, as well as the A3 in Switzerland, have been closed. Traffic maps indicate significant congestion and long delays on alternative routes, particularly on the Swiss A3, where traffic has been severely backed up.
As the situation developed, a police spokesperson confirmed that two men were provisionally detained after being found in the vehicle that was inspected at the border crossing. This border crossing, located on the Rheinfelder Bridge between the German town of Rheinfelden and its Swiss counterpart, sees approximately 30,000 vehicles pass through daily, highlighting the impact of this operation on regional traffic.
