Suspension of Fez Council Member Amid Controversy

In a recent political development, the regional secretariat of the Democratic Forces Party in the Fez-Meknes region announced the suspension of council member Ali Abu Mahdi from the Fez municipal council. This decision came after Abu Mahdi attended the October council session carrying a bag marked with the phrase "Sack Party," which sparked tension and controversy during the meeting. His action was perceived as a provocative reference to an electoral incident that took place in Tangier during the recent elections held on September 23.

The party's regional secretariat issued a statement condemning Abu Mahdi's behavior, characterizing it as an individual act that does not reflect the party's values or political positions. They emphasized that the decision to suspend him was based on the provisions of the party's statutes and internal regulations. A regional arbitration and disciplinary committee has been tasked with reviewing the case and determining the final course of action.

Abu Mahdi's entrance to the meeting with the controversial bag led to a temporary halt in the proceedings, as council members from the Authenticity and Modernity Party protested, demanding a response to his actions before the session could continue. In the midst of rising tensions, Abu Mahdi took the floor under a point of order, subsequently announcing his resignation from the Fez council. He attributed his resignation to the outcomes of the recent legislative elections, where he had run for a seat in the southern Fez district.

In his remarks, Abu Mahdi stated that he had not received any formal notification regarding the suspension and expressed his disinterest in continuing his political involvement in Fez. This incident comes on the heels of his recent participation in local political activities, where he represented the Democratic Forces Party in legislative elections.
