Portugal and Morocco Strengthen Energy Ties

In a significant move towards enhancing energy collaboration, Morocco has resumed discussions with Portugal regarding the development of an electric cable project initially valued at 800 million euros. This project aims to connect the electrical networks of Morocco and Portugal, thereby establishing a critical energy exchange route between North Africa and Europe. The renewed interest in this infrastructure comes as Morocco seeks financial backing from the European Union to support the initiative, which was first proposed in 2018.

The project gained momentum during a recent meeting in Lisbon, where Morocco's Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, met with her Portuguese counterpart, Maria da Graça Carvalho. The two governments expressed their commitment to present the project to the European Commission and explore potential funding mechanisms that involve both community and private financing. Currently, Morocco's electrical grid is interconnected with Europe through Spain, utilizing two underwater cables that facilitate energy exchange between the two nations. Data from the electrical grid for August indicates that the expected commercial capacity from Spain to Morocco stands at 900 MW.

Challenges and Future Prospects

Despite the promising developments, there still remains a considerable amount of work to be done regarding the project with Portugal. Portuguese authorities are tasked with determining the technical solution and final route for the cable. Among the various options being considered is a direct underwater cable linking both countries, as well as a potential joint solution that would leverage existing infrastructure to connect the electrical systems of Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. This strategic initiative aligns with broader discussions on handling the recent migration crisis in Ceuta, as highlighted by Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel, who emphasized that the influx of migrants has not posed a threat to the Schengen area. His comments reflect Portugal's proactive stance in managing regional crises while simultaneously pursuing energy cooperation with Morocco.
