As the countdown to Aïd Al-Adha begins, the wholesale market in Casablanca is witnessing a mix of price fluctuations for vegetables and fruits, with some items experiencing slight increases, while beef prices have notably surged in municipal slaughterhouses, according to the latest weekly report from Casablanca Prestations. This year marks a return to the traditional practice of sheep sacrifice after a year of hiatus, leading to heightened attention on food prices.
On Wednesday, the Casablanca Prestations report indicated that tomato prices remain steady at 3.50–7.50 MAD per kg, maintaining the levels observed the previous week. Squash prices are unchanged at 2.50–9.00 MAD per kg. Carrots have seen a slight decrease at their upper limit, now priced at 1.50–3.00 MAD per kg, down from 1.50–3.50 MAD per kg. Fresh onions have increased to 1.50–2.80 MAD per kg from 1.20–2.50 MAD per kg, while dried onions have stabilized at 6.00–10.00 MAD per kg.
Potato prices have held firm at 3.50–6.50 MAD per kg. Cauliflower has experienced an increase, now ranging from 1.50–3.00 MAD per kg, compared to the previous 1.50–2.50 MAD per kg. Cabbage remains stable at 1.50–3.00 MAD per kg. Both zucchini and cucumbers have strengthened slightly, now priced at 2.00–4.00 MAD per kg. Eggplants are following suit, with prices rising to 2.00–4.00 MAD per kg from 2.00–3.80 MAD per kg.
Fruit Prices: Oranges Decline While Watermelons Rise
In the fruit category, avocado prices remain high at 20.00–35.00 MAD per kg. Imported bananas are stable at 10.00–15.00 MAD per kg, while local bananas have seen a slight increase to 8.00–11.00 MAD per kg, up from 7.00–11.00 MAD per kg. Conversely, orange prices have decreased to 2.50–3.50 MAD per kg from 2.50–4.00 MAD per kg. Local and imported apple prices have remained unchanged at 8.00–15.00 MAD per kg and 12.00–23.00 MAD per kg, respectively. Watermelon prices have risen slightly, now ranging from 1.50–3.80 MAD per kg, up from 1.50–3.50 MAD per kg. The Souihla melon has seen a significant drop, now priced at 2.50–5.50 MAD per kg compared to 3.00–7.00 MAD per kg previously.
Beef Prices Surge in Municipal Slaughterhouses
In municipal slaughterhouses, beef prices have shown a marked increase, now ranging from 92.00–105.00 MAD per kg, up from 85.00–98.00 MAD per kg the previous week. In contrast, sheep meat prices have remained stable at 118.00–125.00 MAD per kg. This week's report reflects a general stability in vegetable prices, with some upward adjustments noted for fresh onions and zucchini, a decrease in oranges and melons, and a significant increase in beef prices. This scenario underscores the volatile nature of the Casablanca wholesale market, where beef continues to exert increasing pressure on prices, while summer fruits gradually establish their presence.
