Mercedes Faces Production Challenges for the Electric GLC
The ramp-up of production for the electric Mercedes GLC is currently encountering significant hurdles. According to reports from industry sources, the automobile manufacturer is grappling with supply shortages not only related to batteries but also due to disruptions in the supply of electrical harnesses. These issues are reportedly exacerbated by severe rainfall and flooding in Morocco, which has impacted the supply chain. Despite these setbacks, Mercedes is committed to overcoming the delays and aims to catch up by the end of the year.
At the Bremen plant, the new GLC, which incorporates EQ technology, is being produced alongside conventional and hybrid variants. This flexible production strategy is helping the company mitigate the supply challenges to some extent. However, due to the unavailability of critical components for the electric vehicle, the affected assembly lines have temporarily shifted to producing a higher volume of conventionally powered GLCs. Mercedes has acknowledged that there have been challenges with 'a few suppliers' during this initial production phase.
Impact of Natural Disasters on Supply Chain
Among the key components affected is the battery supply, which was originally expected to come from the new CATL facility in Debrecen, Hungary. Unfortunately, the production ramp-up at this site is progressing slower than anticipated. While battery modules were reportedly assembled by the end of June, the actual cell production had not commenced by that time. Compounding the issue is a second, more unusual supply chain bottleneck: a supplier in Morocco, Kromberg & Schubert, has reported a complete halt in the production of electrical harnesses. These wiring harnesses are integral to the vehicle assembly process, as they are installed early in the production of the vehicle chassis. If these model-specific parts are missing, it becomes exceedingly difficult to manufacture vehicles in a semi-finished state for later completion.
In late January and February, northern Morocco was hit by several storms that resulted in weeks of heavy rainfall, causing rivers and dams to overflow and forcing hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate their homes. The province of Kénitra was notably affected by the flooding, and the ramifications of this natural disaster continue to manifest. A study conducted by World Weather Attribution indicates that extreme daily rainfall events in the southern region, which includes northern Morocco, have become significantly more intense since 1950, a trend likely exacerbated by climate change.
For Mercedes, these supply chain challenges come at a particularly inopportune moment. The electric GLC is one of the most critical new electric vehicles in the company's lineup. According to company reports, it has received more orders in its first three months than any previous electric vehicle from the brand. The relatively low registration numbers for the GLC thus appear to stem more from limited availability rather than a lack of consumer interest.
However, Mercedes has stated that it has resolved these issues in collaboration with its suppliers and plans to recover the production backlog by the end of the year. This situation underscores the reality that automobile manufacturers must now prepare not only for political crises or material shortages but also for the increasing frequency and severity of weather extremes, making climate adaptation along international supply chains an increasingly vital competitive factor.
