Queen Sofia Leads Collaborative Agreement to Strengthen US-Spain Educational Ties

Queen Sofia's Role in Promoting Spanish-American Relations

Queen Sofia, serving as the honorary president of the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute (QSSI), is set to preside over the signing ceremony of a collaborative agreement between the QSSI and the International Studies Foundation (ISF) as part of the America&Spain 250 initiative. This significant event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 22, in Miami, featuring key figures such as Belén Alfaro, the Consul General of Spain in Miami; Pilar Lladó, the President of the QSSI Board; Begoña Santos, the President and CEO of the QSSI; and María Díaz de la Cebosa, the President of the ISF.

Enhancing Educational and Cultural Collaboration

The agreement aims to establish a framework for cooperation among the three institutions to develop educational and cultural programs that will strengthen academic ties between the United States and Spain. This initiative, America&Spain250, is particularly noteworthy as it commemorates the historical contributions of Spain to the United States as the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of its independence in 2026. A cornerstone of this collaboration will be the support for the Quizstory: Spanish Friendship Podcast Award in the United States, an educational program developed by the QSSI in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. This program invites students nationwide to investigate and narrate, via podcasts, the role played by Spain during the American War of Independence.

In line with the agreement, ISF USA and CIS University will offer scholarships to the winners of the 2026 edition of the contest, allowing them to participate in the Camino de Santiago, an intercultural educational experience in Spain. These scholarships will enable students to travel to Spain, where they will walk a portion of the Camino de Santiago, blending historical learning, cultural immersion, and personal development through experiential education.

Moreover, this collaboration seeks to promote Spain as an international educational destination and foster a deeper understanding among new generations regarding the historical, cultural, and human connections that unite Spain and the United States. The America&Spain250 initiative, spearheaded by the QSSI, is structured through a comprehensive program that includes academic symposiums, educational programs, digital platforms, and public events, all aimed at highlighting and valuing Spain's role in American history.

Since its inception, the International Studies Foundation has been dedicated to promoting education as a tool for social mobility and cultural understanding, driving programs that have benefited thousands of young people and their families across various countries. Through exchange projects, scholarships, and international educational experiences, these initiatives have strengthened the ties between the United States, Spain, and other regions of the world, fostering values such as cooperation, empathy, and social responsibility. The ISF is a non-profit organization based in Spain that channels social commitment and philanthropic investment from CIS University, aiming to create opportunities for children and young adults with limited access to education or those at risk of social exclusion, promoting their development through socio-educational projects. The America&Spain250 initiative focuses on highlighting the crucial contributions of Spain and the Spanish-speaking world to the American Revolution and the development of the United States, ensuring that today's Hispanic and Latin communities recognize the fundamental role their ancestors played in the formation of the United States.

The Queen Sofia Spanish Institute (QSSI), a non-profit organization based in New York, was founded in 1954 by a group of American Hispanophiles eager to stimulate interest in the arts, culture, customs, language, literature, and history of Spain and the Spanish-speaking world. The QSSI continues this vision by striving to share the contributions of Spanish speakers to the history and culture of the United States while showcasing the excellence of the Spanish-speaking world across various fields, fostering lasting bonds of friendship, promoting mutual understanding, and strengthening connections.

For Mediterranean and Atlantic leaders, the QSSI aims to serve as a bridge for communication, information, and understanding between cultures.
