In recent developments, the Archbishop of Rabat, Cristobal Lopez Romero, has found himself at the center of serious allegations, with at least five women accusing him of sexual assault. This troubling news emerged following an investigative report by Agence France-Presse, which prompted the Spanish-born cleric to announce that he is "stepping back" from his duties while the Vatican conducts a thorough inquiry into the matter.
The investigation by Agence France-Presse included interviews with a retired woman linked to the Church and an examination of written accounts from another individual who claimed that Lopez had engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct. The 74-year-old archbishop has categorically denied any wrongdoing, asserting his innocence when contacted for comments by the agency.
Allegations have surfaced suggesting that at least three additional women have experienced similar misconduct at the hands of Lopez, although these claims have yet to be verified. Some of these accusations reportedly arose during confidential confessions, complicating the efforts to establish a clear account of events. A written complaint addressed to the Vatican embassy in Rabat detailed allegations of "inappropriate" physical interactions, which included "particularly intense and prolonged embraces" and attempts by Lopez to get physically close enough to kiss one of the complainants.
In his defense, Lopez stated, "I am aware of the allegations and have already responded to my ecclesiastical superiors. I will continue to fully cooperate with them in the investigation." He firmly maintained that he had not engaged in any forms of assault, violence, or sexual harassment.
While the Vatican has yet to issue a comment on the situation, it is notable that Lopez, who was appointed by the Pope, holds a significant position within the Catholic Church hierarchy. Cardinals, such as Lopez, play a crucial role in advising the Pope on governance matters and participate in the conclave to elect his successor, especially if they are under the age of 80. Some had even speculated that Lopez could be a potential candidate to succeed Pope Francis in the upcoming 2025 conclave.
It is important to note that no formal complaint has been lodged with Moroccan authorities regarding these allegations. Nadia Debbache, a Moroccan lawyer specializing in cases of sexual violence, remarked that the actions attributed to the cardinal could constitute "aggravated sexual harassment and aggravated sexual assault," highlighting the significant abuse of authority that these allegations imply.
Lopez is affiliated with the Salesians of Don Bosco religious order and has an extensive background in academia, holding degrees in philosophy and theology, along with a diploma in journalism. He served as the president of the Conference of Bishops of North Africa from 2022 to 2025 and has been involved in the Vatican's interreligious dialogue efforts since 2020.
