Rabat Court Upholds Imprisonment of Mohamed Ziane
In a significant ruling on Wednesday, the Court of Appeal in Rabat has denied a request for temporary release submitted by the defense team of Mohamed Ziane. Currently incarcerated at the El Arjat 1 local prison, Ziane is serving sentences stemming from two separate cases that have raised considerable public interest. In a notable decision issued on April 8, 2026, the criminal chamber of the Rabat Court of Appeal sentenced Ziane, a former bar association president and ex-minister of human rights, to five years in prison due to misappropriation of funds belonging to the Moroccan Liberal Party.
This latest ruling comes while Ziane is already serving an additional three-year sentence. This prior sentence was handed down in 2022 following a complaint filed by the Ministry of Interior. Ziane faced an extensive list of charges in this case, including eleven counts that ranged from contempt of magistrates and public officials to the dissemination of statements intended to influence judicial decisions before final judgments were rendered. Furthermore, he has been accused of spreading false allegations against a woman based on her gender, showcasing the gravity and complexity of the accusations against him.
