The Moroccan capital, Rabat, is currently the focal point for the African Maritime Forces Summit (AMFS-2026), which commenced on Monday and is set to conclude this Friday. Organized by the Royal Moroccan Navy in collaboration with the Naval Forces Europe and Africa (NAVAF) Command and the Marine Corps Europe and Africa (MARFORAF) Command, the AMFS-2026 Summit aligns with royal directives aimed at promoting dialogue on vital maritime security issues. According to a statement from the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR), this summit serves as an essential platform for dialogue, enabling officials from various nations to engage in meaningful discussions about enhancing maritime security and regional cooperation.
International Participation and Thematic Focus
This major international gathering brings together a diverse array of participants, including representatives from African nations, the United States, and several other countries such as Saudi Arabia, Brazil, the Republic of Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, France, Italy, Jordan, Malta, Norway, Oman, the Netherlands, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Turkey. The summit's discussions are organized around three pivotal themes: maritime security, regional cooperation, and technological innovation, underscoring the multifaceted approach necessary to tackle contemporary maritime challenges.
The opening ceremony featured prominent figures, including Rear Admiral Mohamed Tahin, Inspector of the Royal Navy, and Colonel Abdellah Athmani from the FAR, alongside American dignitaries such as Mr. Ben Ziff, Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Rabat, Admiral George Wikoff of NAVAF, and Major General Daniel L. Shipley of MARFORAF. The summit's agenda is packed with conferences and presentations led by experts from Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad, as well as specialists from the Royal Navy, focusing on the Royal Atlantic Initiative.
The discussions will cover a wide range of topics, including but not limited to, coordination in hydrography, oceanography, and cartography; updates on the International Hydrographic Organization standards; the importance of regional hydrographic commissions; the coordination of search and rescue operations at sea; and enhancing maritime domain awareness and monitoring capabilities. Additionally, a maritime security exhibition was held on July 21st, showcasing institutional booths from various agencies dedicated to maritime safety and security, including the Royal Gendarmerie and the National Maritime Coordination and Rescue Centre.
