Rabat Kicks Off 'World Book Capital 2026' Initiative Ahead of Major Book Fair

Rabat's Cultural Renaissance with the World Book Capital 2026

In a significant cultural development, Rabat, Morocco's capital, is poised to enhance its reputation as a vibrant cultural center with the launch of its 'World Book Capital 2026' initiative, coinciding with the 31st International Publishing and Book Fair. This initiative, endorsed by UNESCO, is set to position Rabat as a focal point for literary and cultural activities on a global scale. The designation, awarded to Rabat in October 2024, acknowledges the city's dynamic publishing environment, ongoing literary advancements, and various initiatives aimed at promoting reading, literacy, and engagement among youth and marginalized communities.

UNESCO highlighted Rabat's impressive infrastructure, including its 54 publishing houses and a growing network of bookstores, as well as its status as a host for one of Africa's leading international book fairs. The upcoming celebrations will commence on April 23, aligning with World Book and Copyright Day, marking the beginning of a year filled with literary festivities.

A Year-Long Celebration of Literature

The local program will kick off at the end of April and will run parallel to the International Publishing and Book Fair, which is slated to take place from May 1 to May 10 at OLM Souissi, featuring France as the guest of honor and celebrating the legacy of Ibn Battuta as a key figure in this year's events. This unique pairing promises to elevate the book fair beyond a mere publishing event, embedding it within a broader cultural context that promotes reading, knowledge sharing, and public access to literature. This strategic approach not only aligns with UNESCO's rationale for selecting Rabat but also seeks to integrate books into the everyday lives of citizens.

The year-long program is ambitious, comprising 342 activities across 12 thematic areas, with a clear objective of making literature accessible outside traditional venues. The initiative aims to bring books into various public spaces such as hospitals, orphanages, correctional facilities, and transportation hubs, thereby reaching diverse audiences. The book fair itself will host 890 exhibitors from 60 countries, showcasing over 130,000 titles and featuring more than 204 cultural events that will involve a multitude of speakers, thinkers, and creators.

This year’s focus on France as the guest of honor underscores the deep cultural ties between Morocco and France, while the homage to Ibn Battuta emphasizes the importance of travel narratives in literature. The 'World Book Capital 2026' program is thus set to be a transformative experience, testing the efficacy of a book-centered cultural policy designed not only for institutions but also for the general public, ultimately enhancing the cultural landscape of Rabat.
