Rabat Set to Shine as UNESCO World Book Capital and Host of International Book Fair

Rabat's Cultural Milestone: UNESCO World Book Capital 2026

Under the esteemed patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the vibrant city of Rabat, Morocco, is gearing up to celebrate a significant cultural milestone as it hosts the 'Rabat World Book Capital 2026' program starting from April 24, 2026. This momentous occasion coincides with the 31st edition of the International Book Fair (SIEL), which will take place from May 1 to May 10, 2026. The event is set to reaffirm Rabat's position as a cultural crossroads and a global center for the promotion of literature and knowledge. Being designated as the World Book Capital by UNESCO highlights Rabat's rich historical legacy of over a millennium, its unwavering commitment to culture and education, and the dynamic growth of its publishing sector.

Rabat boasts more than 54 publishing houses and a flourishing network of bookstores, making it an essential contributor to democratizing access to knowledge. The International Book Fair, organized by the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, stands as one of Africa's premier literary events, forming a core part of this annual celebration. In conjunction with national partners and UNESCO, the Ministry curates an expansive program featuring an impressive 342 activities centered on twelve thematic areas.

A Celebration of Literature and Cultural Exchange

The upcoming SIEL will showcase a diverse cultural program with 890 exhibitors—comprising 320 direct and 570 indirect participants—from over 60 countries, presenting more than 130,000 titles to eager readers. This year, France will be honored as the guest of honor, while the fair will also commemorate the legacy of the renowned 14th-century Moroccan explorer, Ibn Battuta, placing a spotlight on travel literature in discussions and panels. The fair promises a rich cultural agenda, with over 204 events planned and the participation of 720 thought leaders and creators who will delve into contemporary reading issues and innovative practices within the cultural and creative sectors.

In alignment with the ethos of the World Book Capital initiative, Rabat aims to extend the reach of literature beyond traditional forums. This includes outreach programs that bring books to various community settings, such as hospitals, correctional facilities, orphanages, public spaces, and public transport. The designation of Rabat as a World Book Capital is an honor shared with only a select number of cities since the program's inception in 2001, with Rabat being the 26th city to receive this title.
