Rabat: The Future of Energy in the Arab World

From March 23 to 25, 2027, Morocco's capital will become the epicenter of energy discussions within the Arab world. In collaboration with the National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), the Arab Electricity Union will hold its 9th General Congress, focusing on significant challenges such as decarbonization, energy storage, and the integration of artificial intelligence in the electrical sector. This event signals a robust commitment to energy diplomacy for the Kingdom of Morocco, as it prepares to welcome political leaders, industry experts, and major stakeholders from 19 Arab countries, alongside prominent international partners, to shape the future of regional electrical networks.

The congress will operate under the theme “The Future of Electrical Systems in Arab Countries”, aiming to tackle profound transformations currently affecting the sector. Discussions will revolve around five key areas:

  • Resilience and security of supply of networks in light of macroeconomic and climatic shocks;
  • Digitalization and artificial intelligence as essential tools for optimizing electrical infrastructures;
  • Mass integration of renewable energies and preparing transport/distribution networks for large-scale green projects;
  • Storage technologies, which are crucial for ensuring flexibility in energy transition;
  • Development of skills and enhancement of specialized media in the sector.

Morocco: A Strategic Energy Hub

The hosting of this 9th edition in Morocco underscores the strategic position the Kingdom holds under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. Tarik Hamane, the General Director of ONEE, emphasized that the organization of this event reaffirms Morocco's role as an energy crossroads between the Arab world, Africa, and Europe, showcasing its steadfast commitment to enhancing regional and international cooperation.

According to Hamane, this congress reflects a shared determination to accelerate the transition towards more sustainable systems: “In light of the challenges related to energy transition, digitalization, and storage, it is crucial to foster the exchange of expertise, innovation, and partnerships aimed at creating more resilient and efficient electrical systems.”

In addition to the conferences, an international exhibition will bring together equipment manufacturers, industrial players, utilities, and providers of cutting-edge technologies specialized in the production, transportation, and distribution of electricity. This space is designed to showcase innovations and develop commercial and technological partnerships among Arab nations.

It’s important to note that the Arab Electricity Union brings together key public and private sector players, including operators, companies, research centers, and universities across 19 countries in the region.
