Rabat Unveils Exciting Activities as the World Book Capital 2026

Rabat's Recognition as World Book Capital 2026

Recently, UNESCO officially designated Rabat as the World Book Capital for 2026, recognizing the city's vibrant literary scene and the significant contribution of its publishing industry. This prestigious title highlights Rabat's role as a cultural crossroads, where literature facilitates the transmission of knowledge and artistic expression across its diverse populations. The Moroccan capital is home to an impressive network of 54 publishing houses, the International Book and Publishing Fair (SIEL), which ranks as the third-largest globally and the foremost in Africa, along with a rapidly expanding number of bookstores. This acknowledgment by UNESCO underscores Rabat's commitment to enhancing literacy, particularly among women and youth, while combating illiteracy in underserved communities.

Launch of the 2026 Program

On April 13, the Moroccan capital hosted the official launch of the activities planned for its tenure as the World Book Capital. The highlight of this celebration will be the 2026 International Book and Publishing Fair, scheduled to take place from May 1 to May 10. During this event, Mehdi Bensaïd, the Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, emphasized the symbolic and strategic importance of this recognition. He stated that it is not merely an accolade but a "proclamation of the triumph of knowledge," positioning Rabat in a landscape where culture is an accessible right for all. The minister paid tribute to the unsung heroes of the literary world, especially the booksellers of the Medina, who are instrumental in embedding reading into the daily lives of citizens.

Bensaïd further articulated in his presentation letter for SIEL 2026 that "books are an invitation to travel," inviting readers to explore infinite realms of imagination. In a world that is interconnected yet often fractured by memory and identity, the literatures from around the globe promise hope and openness toward a cosmopolitan, pluralistic, and peaceful future. The International Book and Publishing Fair is poised to play a crucial role in promoting literature as a means to unite cultures, transcend conflicts, and foster artistic innovation. This year's event is particularly significant as it aligns with Rabat's designation as the World Book Capital by UNESCO, reaffirming the city's historical role as a bridge between continents and civilizations.
