Rabat Unveils Headquarters of African Capitals of Culture to Enhance Cultural Cooperation

Strengthening Cultural Bonds Across Africa

On Thursday, the city of Rabat witnessed the official inauguration of the headquarters for the African Capitals of Culture (CAC), a significant step towards bolstering cultural cooperation among nations on the African continent. This event brought together prominent figures from both cultural and diplomatic sectors, showcasing Morocco's increasing commitment to fostering African cultural integration. The establishment of this institution in Rabat comes at a time when there is a renewed focus on leveraging culture as a catalyst for development and unity across Africa.

During the ceremony, various speakers highlighted that hosting the CAC headquarters in Morocco symbolizes the country’s dedication to enhancing African collaboration and promoting intercultural dialogue. Furthermore, it reinforces the notion that culture is a fundamental pillar of sustainable, inclusive, and pluralistic development. The event was graced by notable personalities, including Adama Traoré, the President of the CAC Committee, and Salah-Eddine Abkari, the Acting Secretary-General of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication’s Culture Department, along with several African ambassadors accredited to Morocco.

A Vision for Cultural Development

In a speech read on his behalf, Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid articulated the richness of Africa's linguistic and cultural diversity, underscoring that the CAC initiative aligns with broader efforts to weave culture into the continent's development frameworks. He emphasized the urgency of strengthening Africa's cultural and creative industries, pointing out the disparity between locally produced content and imported cultural materials, while also highlighting the potential of the continent's youthful and digitally connected population.

Adama Traoré further elaborated on the initiative’s genesis during the 2018 Africities Summit in Marrakech, emphasizing that it is built on the conviction that culture serves as a potent engine for social cohesion and development. He noted that the new headquarters is intended not just as an administrative entity but as a dynamic platform for dialogue and collaboration among African cities. The CAC headquarters will play a pivotal role in aiding host cities, coordinating institutional programs, and nurturing networks among cultural participants across Africa. Additionally, it aims to bolster cultural and creative industries, promote artistic mobility, and enhance the recognition of African heritage within the framework of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
