Rabat's Urban Transport Revolution Takes Shape
The implementation of the High-Level Bus System (BHNS) in Rabat is gaining momentum as the city allocates over 20 million Moroccan Dirhams (MAD) for essential lighting and traffic signal upgrades. This significant investment marks a pivotal step in the project, which aims to enhance the public transport infrastructure across the Rabat-Salé-Témara metropolitan area. The project, overseen by Rabat Région Mobilité, has recently issued a call for tenders for preparatory work on public lighting and traffic signals for four dedicated BHNS lines.
Once completed, these lines will stretch a total of 48.3 kilometers, with 38.5 kilometers planned as dedicated bus corridors. This initiative is part of a broader effort to develop a comprehensive and efficient public transport network, designed to serve densely populated areas through dedicated transit lines. The BHNS aims not only to improve travel efficiency but also to promote sustainable urban mobility within the region.
Future Expansion and Regional Adoption
The urban transport model established by the BHNS is set to be replicated in other Moroccan cities. Fès has already initiated a tender for the preliminary project study of its first line, with a budget of 11.4 million MAD. The region aspires to establish a total of five lines by 2040, with six cities currently exploring this innovative transport solution. Besides Rabat and Fès, Casablanca has been operating two lines since March 2024, covering 24.5 kilometers with 42 stations. Agadir is on track to launch its first 15.5-kilometer line, while Marrakech has initiated studies for four additional lines. Additionally, Tanger is preparing to implement a similar project, highlighting the growing trend of modernized public transportation across the nation.
