Ralf Rangnick Welcomes New Talents to Austrian National Team Ahead of World Cup

Integrating New Stars into the Austrian National Team

As the World Cup in North America approaches, Ralf Rangnick and his coaching staff face the exciting challenge of incorporating two promising talents into the well-established framework of the Austrian national football team. Rangnick has identified both Paul Wanner, aged 20, and Carney Chukwuemeka, aged 22, as key players for the attacking midfield position, where competition within the ÖFB team is already fierce. The addition of these two newcomers has been welcomed warmly by the team, including federation head Josef Pröll, who expressed optimism about their potential contributions.

During their first call-up on Monday in Vienna, Rangnick commented on the significance of these transfers, suggesting that if the ÖFB were a club, one might consider these additions as astute moves. Wanner has transitioned from German youth teams to represent Austria, while Chukwuemeka has shifted from English youth affiliations. Rangnick emphasized the importance of patience and the absence of pressure during this transition, which has proven to be beneficial.

Assessing Their Potential and Roles

Rangnick described both players as midfielders with a preference for the 'eight' position. He elaborated that within his 4-2-3-1 system, they could potentially fill the critical 'ten' role, which exists three times in his formation. Current fixtures like Christoph Baumgartner, who plays as a 'nine-and-a-half,' and Marcel Sabitzer on the left flank, are considered essential to the team's strategy, while Romano Schmid from Werder Bremen has recently occupied the right flank. Wanner, who has also played as a defensive midfielder at PSV Eindhoven, will be evaluated during the upcoming training camp to determine his readiness for the national team level. Rangnick noted that while Chukwuemeka might be better suited for a more advanced position, their presence will certainly intensify the competition in the midfield, which he believes is a healthy aspect of team dynamics.

Both players will have the opportunity to showcase their skills during the team's training camp in Marbella next week and potentially earn spots in the World Cup matches against Ghana and South Korea later this month. Rangnick highlighted that their chances of making the World Cup squad would depend significantly on their performances during this training period, acknowledging that his selections are subjective, yet ultimately, players earn their spots through their displays on the pitch.

Rangnick expressed little concern regarding the integration of Wanner and Chukwuemeka into the team. Wanner had previously participated as a training guest in the ÖFB setup back in November 2022, making his return feel like a 'welcome back' moment. On the other hand, the situation is different for Chukwuemeka, who, despite being from Vienna and having connections with Borussia Dortmund's Sabitzer, has yet to master the German language. Rangnick indicated that while English is the prevailing language of communication at many major clubs, it would be beneficial for Chukwuemeka to learn some German football terminology, a suggestion that he made with a sense of humor regarding the logistics of hiring a German teacher for the Marbella trip.

Both the federation and team members expressed enthusiasm about the addition of these two young talents. Pröll commended the professional manner in which the transition was handled, acknowledging Rangnick's efforts in facilitating the change. He noted that both players possess significant future potential for Austria, being key figures in their respective teams with commendable career trajectories. Team goalkeeper Alexander Schlager echoed this sentiment, praising the decision of these promising players to join the national team and recognizing the quality they bring to the squad. Schlager recalled having seen Wanner's exceptional abilities as early as 2022 in Marbella and acknowledged that succeeding at such a young age at a club like Dortmund is no small feat.
