Significant Advancements in Morocco's High-Speed Rail Initiative
The ambitious high-speed train project connecting Kenitra and Marrakech is making remarkable strides, as confirmed by the Moroccan government. The construction of this vital railway link has surpassed the 30% completion mark, with an official delivery date set for December 2029. This development is part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing urban congestion and promoting eco-friendly public transportation across the country.
The project not only focuses on the high-speed rail line but also includes the development of modern train stations along the route. A significant emphasis is placed on enhancing the Casablanca axis, which will feature 17 stops between Benslimane, Nouaceur, and the port. Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh has highlighted the creation of a unique interconnection hub dubbed "the aerospace," which is designed to simultaneously accommodate high-speed trains, regional trains, and shuttles.
Future Connectivity and Regional Development
In addition to the ongoing work on the Kenitra-Marrakech line, the government is already planning an extension southward toward Agadir. This segment, which is estimated to cost approximately 55 billion dirhams, poses a substantial engineering challenge due to the mountainous terrain of the High Atlas region. The construction will consist of 70% bridges and tunnels spanning over 35 kilometers. Given the complexity of this project, the Ministry and the National Office of Railways (ONCF) are actively seeking international funding to support this monumental endeavor.
Upon completion, the new high-speed line is expected to drastically reduce travel times between Rabat and Casablanca, enhancing connectivity and mobility within Morocco. The new route will serve key locations, linking Mohammed V Airport and the large stadium in Benslimane before reaching its final destination in Marrakech. This transformative railway project is poised to reshape travel in Morocco, preparing the country for the upcoming 2030 World Cup and enhancing its status as a regional transportation hub.
