Reconnecting Through Travel
After our son moved out, my husband and I embarked on a journey to Japan, marking our first trip as "empty nesters". This excursion allowed us to immerse ourselves in the rich culture and breathtaking beauty of Japan, providing an opportunity to reconnect and remember the reasons behind our love for each other. Like many couples, travel has always served as a magical bond between us, fueling our curiosity and desire to explore new destinations together.
Reflecting on our honeymoon, which was my inaugural international adventure, we traversed the charming cities of Rome, Florence, and Venice, filling our hearts with wonder. Over the years, we journeyed around the globe, often accompanied by our son. However, as he entered high school, our frequent travels took a back seat, given that we could no longer easily pull him from school, and he was too young to stay home alone.
Now, as our son enjoys his second year of college and embraces campus life, my husband and I find ourselves navigating the joys of being empty nesters. With our 25th wedding anniversary approaching, we realized it was time to rekindle our sense of adventure together.
Choosing Our Destination
Deciding on our travel itinerary became an exercise in compromise. I envisioned Morocco with its idyllic riads and golden desert light, while my husband championed Japan for its exquisite cuisine, rich history, and vibrant culture. Luckily, I share his interest in these aspects, which made it easier for me to shift my focus. We quickly booked our flights to Tokyo and included a stop in Kyoto on our itinerary, leaving Morocco for another time.
Our Japanese adventure was filled with awe-inspiring experiences; we marveled at the immersive art installations in Azabudai Hills, paid our respects at historic temples, and strolled through immaculate gardens. We savored an incredible 14-course omakase dinner and braved the bustling Shibuya Crossing. We even enjoyed a unique green matcha beer from the Tokyo City View observation deck. Although we faced challenges, such as navigating a crowded kiosk to purchase our Shinkansen tickets, the breathtaking views aboard the bullet train made it all worthwhile.
Neither of us speaks Japanese, which meant relying on each other to solve problems throughout our trip. The most gratifying realization was that we still genuinely enjoy each other's company, even after all these years.
While an empty nest might lead to a quieter life, it doesn't necessarily alleviate the stress or routine of daily life. Let's be honest: even the most devoted couples can find their lives monotonous. However, our vacation breathed new life into our relationship, allowing us to reconnect and reignite the spark that everyday life often dulls. The drastic change of scenery in Japan provided a refreshing jolt, encouraging me to step outside of my comfort zone on our final day. When I discovered that our hotel in Kyoto had its own onsen, I decided to take a dip. My husband chose not to join me in the men's bath but supported my decision.
As is customary, swimsuits are not permitted in these mineral hot springs, so I bravely embraced the experience and entered the water naked, just as everyone else did. Having navigated temples, shrines, unfamiliar foods, and crowds, I emerged from the onsen experience without regret.
This empty nest phase has become a wonderful opportunity for my husband and me to redefine ourselves. With the focus no longer on raising our child—an endeavor we have successfully completed—we can now invest our energy back into our relationship. Travel has always been our shared passion, and our journey to Japan reaffirmed that connection. It reminded me of all the reasons I fell in love with my husband in the first place. We continue to be a remarkable team, especially when exploring the world together.
Experiencing a new country with my best friend is an exhilarating adventure that allows us to create new memories and life chapters together. I can hardly wait to pack our bags again. Where will our next adventure take us?
