Insights from the Recent Seminar on UN Peace Operations Reform
On May 21, 2026, the GRIP (Group for Research and International Policy) hosted a significant seminar at the Cercle Mess des Officiers (CMO) in Rabat, which focused on the theme of evolving UN peacekeeping efforts amidst ongoing reforms and operational implementation challenges. This event was strategically held alongside the Francophone Ministerial Conference on Peacekeeping, where the Rabat Declaration was adopted. The seminar was organized in collaboration with the French Ministry of Armed Forces' General Directorate for International Relations and Strategy (DGRIS), a founding partner of the Observatory, and received support from the Royal Armed Forces of Morocco.
The event was part of the ongoing efforts and interests of the Boutros-Ghali Observatory in shaping the future of peacekeeping since its establishment. Recent discussions have revolved around critical topics such as the challenges faced by the UN in peacekeeping, balancing standardization with the adaptation of peace operations, and examining the flexibility and adaptability of UN missions. For instance, recent studies have addressed the challenges and prospects of UN peacekeeping and the implications of incorporating AI and digital technologies in operational frameworks.
The seminar aimed to enrich the dialogue concerning the reform processes affecting UN peace operations, particularly as these missions encounter increased budgetary constraints alongside ever-complex operational expectations. This reflects the urgent need for innovative solutions to improve the effectiveness of peacekeeping missions globally.
