Regional Insights into Household Expenditure Trends in Morocco

According to the latest regional accounts released by the High Commission for Planning for the year 2024, five regions in Morocco accounted for approximately three-quarters (74.4%) of the total final consumption expenditures of households. Notably, the Casablanca-Settat region alone represented 25.3% of the national household consumption expenditures, followed by the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region at 14.8%, Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima at 11.6%, Fès-Meknès at 11.4%, and Marrakech-Safi at 11.3%. The total expenditures reached an impressive 944.1 billion dirhams nationwide in 2024. This data underscores significant regional disparities as the remaining regions collectively contributed nearly one-quarter (25.6%) of the national household consumption expenditures, with contributions ranging from a mere 0.8% from the Dakhla-Oued Edahab region to 7.2% from the Souss-Massa region.

The year 2024 saw an expansion in the disparities of final household consumption expenditures, with the average absolute difference between the expenditures of different regions and the regional average hitting 51.5 billion dirhams, an increase from 48.5 billion dirhams in 2023. This rise indicates a growing concentration of consumption expenditures in the more dynamic regions of the country. On a per capita basis, final household consumption expenditures reached 25,664 dirhams nationally in 2024. Interestingly, six regions surpassed this national average, including Dakhla-Oued Edahab (34,515 dirhams), Casablanca-Settat (31,173 dirhams), the East region (27,805 dirhams), Rabat-Salé-Kénitra (27,250 dirhams), Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima (27,210 dirhams), and Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra (25,696 dirhams).

Moreover, there was an increase in the disparity of per capita final household consumption expenditures, with the average absolute difference rising from 3,423 dirhams in 2023 to 3,609 dirhams in 2024. These statistics offer a detailed view of the consumption landscape in Morocco, highlighting the significant economic inequalities across different regions of the country, which necessitates targeted policy intervention and development strategies.
