Remembering Edgar Morin: A French Sociologist and Advocate for Humanity

Edgar Morin: A Life Dedicated to Knowledge and Humanity

Edgar Morin, the esteemed French thinker, philosopher, and sociologist, passed away at the remarkable age of 105, as announced by his family on the night of May 29. Born in Paris in 1921 as Edgar Nahum, Morin leaves behind a profound intellectual legacy comprising over 60 books and essays translated into dozens of languages. He was widely recognized for his critical thoughts and staunch advocacy for freedom and independent thinking.

Morin's life underwent a significant transformation during World War II when he joined the French Resistance against Nazi occupation and served with the Free France forces. After the war, he emerged as one of the leading intellectual figures who shaped political and intellectual discourse in France and globally. Following the end of the war, Morin joined the French National Centre for Scientific Research, embarking on a long career that blended sociology, philosophy, and anthropology. Among his most renowned works is the series titled "Method," where he developed the concept of "complex thinking," emphasizing the idea that the world can only be understood when viewed as an interconnected whole rather than as isolated parts.

Morin asserted that a significant issue in modern times is that individuals have learned to compartmentalize knowledge into various disciplines without understanding how to connect them. This realization drove him throughout his life to advocate for a way of thinking that integrates sciences, philosophy, and human experience. Even at an advanced age, Morin remained active in public discourse, championing social justice and opposing wars and economic dominance. Remarkably, in 2024, at the age of 103, he released a new part of his extensive intellectual project after discovering a manuscript that had been lost for years.

Morocco: A Special Place in Edgar Morin's Heart

Morocco held a unique place in Morin's life, with his relationship with the country dating back several decades. His connection deepened after marrying Moroccan researcher Sabah Abou Salam in 2012, who became both his life partner and intellectual companion. Together, they spent considerable time in Marrakech, which Morin came to regard as a second home, offering him refuge from the cold of Paris and allowing him to indulge in its cultural life.

Morin participated in numerous intellectual seminars and discussions in Morocco and was a distinguished guest at the African Book Festival in Marrakech in 2024. During this event, he reiterated the importance of dialogue between peoples and cultures, asserting that knowledge and culture serve as powerful tools to combat extremism and foster a more humane world.
