Remembering Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani: The Former Emir's Connection to Morocco

The Legacy of Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani in Morocco

On July 12, 2026, the world mourned the passing of Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Emir of Qatar, who died at the age of 74. His death was announced by Qatar's news agency, which stated that the Emir passed away in the morning, leading to a declaration of four days of public mourning across the emirate. Known for his frequent visits to Morocco, Hamad bin Khalifa had established a significant presence in the country, making it a favored destination for both official duties and private vacations.

Throughout his reign, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani cultivated a strong relationship with Morocco, often visiting the nation for both state affairs and leisure. His first official visits date back to when he was still in power, where he was received warmly by King Mohammed VI. Marrakech, one of Morocco's most famous cities, was among his preferred locations, where he spent time with family and dignitaries. Notably, in September 2011, he arrived in Marrakech with his wife, Sheikha Moza, and other Qatari officials, marking one of many trips that underscored his connection to the region.

A Life of Diplomatic Engagement and Personal Retreats

After his voluntary abdication in 2013, Hamad continued to visit Morocco frequently, enjoying the serene landscapes and hospitality that the country offered. His time in Ifrane in December 2015 was cut short due to an unfortunate accident that resulted in a leg fracture, requiring emergency medical attention in Zurich. Nevertheless, these incidents did not deter his affection for Morocco. In January 2020, during his convalescence, he returned to his residence in the Palmeraie of Marrakech, where he received a visit from his son, the current Emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

The former Emir's ties to Morocco extended beyond just Marrakech and Ifrane; in December 2024, he chose to spend his end-of-year vacation at his palace near Al Mahbes in the Assa-Zag province. The Qatari royal family has invested in various projects in the southern provinces of Morocco, including plans for a 75-bed hospital named after Sheikh Hamad, which reflects their commitment to the region's development.

Ascending to power in 1995, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani played a pivotal role in transforming Qatar into a significant diplomatic and economic player on the world stage, with his legacy including the launch of Al Jazeera in 1996. However, his frequent returns to Morocco, both in official capacity and privately, underscore his fondness for the kingdom and its people, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered fondly.
