The arrival of the first autumn rains has breathed new life into the fields of Morocco, creating an atmosphere of optimism among farmers and agricultural professionals. Although the rainfall has been limited, it is sufficient to instill hope as it marks the onset of the new agricultural season, which traditionally kicks off in October each year.
As farmers engage in essential activities such as tilling the soil, sourcing seeds and fertilizers, and repairing irrigation systems, preparations are underway across various regions of Morocco. These insights come from a recent report by the online newspaper Hespress, which gathered impressions from agricultural professionals. However, all eyes remain fixed on the sky, as farmers eagerly await additional rainfall to secure the commencement of planting and sowing, which will shape the upcoming weeks and months, thus making the start of this season promising.
“Preparations Underway and Seeds Available”
Mouha Arshoun, a farmer and professional representative serving as the "Secretary of Farmers" in the Kiko area of the Boulemane region (Fès-Meknès), stated that preparations for the new season commenced with the first drops of rain. In an interview with Hespress, Arshoun explained that farmers are currently engaged in tilling the land and getting it ready for planting. The actual sowing and planting processes are set to begin in October and November, depending on the types of crops, including barley and other grains.
Moreover, Arshoun highlighted a comprehensive effort and interest from various stakeholders, including agricultural directorates, agricultural chambers, and relevant authorities. He confirmed that there is an adequate supply of seeds available at the agricultural directorates and markets, with favorable prices that meet farmers' needs, particularly following a bountiful harvest of grains from the previous agricultural season.
Having a direct line of communication with industry professionals, Arshoun noted positive feedback following the initial rains, but he also pointed out that farmers, especially in the Fès-Meknès region, are looking forward to cooler temperatures and continued rainfall to begin sowing. He emphasized that all necessary materials, from direct planting techniques to seeds, are available, expressing hope for a good and fruitful agricultural season thanks to the anticipated rains.
Support for Water Resources
On another note, Mohamed Al-Azawi, the director of the agricultural chamber in the Souss-Massa region, explained that agricultural activity in this area heavily relies on irrigation, particularly for vegetables, early crops, and tunnel farming, as well as some fruit trees and citrus plants. Al-Azawi detailed that the sources of water supply vary from surface water through dams to groundwater and seawater desalination technologies.
He emphasized the crucial role of rainfall in supporting and replenishing water resources, which enables farmers to resume irrigation in various watersheds. Al-Azawi confirmed that the Ministry of Agriculture and regional structures have implemented the necessary field and administrative arrangements, which include rehabilitating water channels and preparing hydrological structures to be ready for the rains.
Although the recent rainfall was limited and lasted only a day or two, he noted that agricultural advisory services and the regional office for agricultural investment are actively present in the field to assist and guide farmers, expressing hope that the rains will continue to yield positive results this season.
With declared readiness and hopes pinned on the skies, farmers are entering the new season. Preparations are in place, and supplies are available, but the final outcome will depend on what the coming weeks and months bring, dictated by the whims of nature.
