Construction Projects Leave Ihchach Residents Frustrated
The construction project intended to transform the Ihchach neighborhood in Agadir has instead become a source of significant discomfort for its residents. Unfinished work has resulted in damaged streets, exposed holes, and excessive dust, all of which complicate transportation within the area and fuel the anger of local inhabitants. The situation has escalated to a point where access to homes has become increasingly problematic, particularly for the elderly and those with mobility issues. Reports of incidents attributed to the unattended excavations have also surfaced, adding to the community's concerns.
"What we are enduring has become impossible to accept. We urgently need the work to resume and be completed swiftly," states Abdelaziz Kahlawi, a resident of Ihchach. He expresses frustration at both the cessation of construction activities and the quality of materials utilized, which has only deepened the residents' confusion and dissatisfaction. Kahlawi has called on the Agadir municipal council, led by Aziz Akhannouch, to intervene and resolve the ongoing issues. "They have stopped work for one month, two months... that's excessive. We are constantly told that the construction will recommence soon, yet as we near the end of the year, the situation remains unchanged," he laments.
Community Voices Demand Accountability
The frustration among other residents is equally palpable. Fadma, a fellow Ihchach inhabitant, has shared how the current conditions have severely impacted her daily life. She recounts suffering leg injuries and struggling to leave her home due to the poor state of the roads. "Everything is dug up, everything is dusty. I fear my condition will worsen," she confides. Beyond the immediate inconvenience, residents are particularly vocal about the lack of transparency regarding the timeline for resuming and completing the construction project. Fadma has urged the relevant authorities, including the Wali of the Souss-Massa region, to step in and help resolve these pressing issues that residents face on a daily basis.
Khadija, another local resident, claims that construction has been at a standstill since the month of Ramadan. She also recalls problems encountered at the start of the project, particularly concerning the quality of the surfacing materials. Some sections that were previously completed have reportedly been removed before new materials could be installed, yet this change has not rectified the issues observed on-site. "They started working, then left everything half-finished. They removed some parts and replaced them, but to this day, nothing is truly complete," she explains.
Moreover, Khadija highlights several accidents that have occurred in the neighborhood, including one incident where a woman sustained facial injuries after falling into a hole. There have been similar incidents involving children and elderly residents. "How many times have people fallen here, both the elderly and children? Our neighbor fell and even injured her eye," she recounts. Residents are also disturbed by the dust that infiltrates their homes, along with the myriad inconveniences stemming from the current state of the neighborhood. "The dust comes into our houses. We live with it every day, and we no longer find our peace," Fadma laments.
In light of these ongoing challenges, residents are now demanding urgent intervention from the municipal council and the responsible companies to secure the area, restart the construction work, and ultimately deliver a livable neighborhood back to its inhabitants.
