Transformation of Fes’ Historic Central Market
In a significant step towards the modernization of Fes' historical Central Market, located on Mohammed V Street, reconstruction efforts have commenced aimed at rejuvenating one of the city’s oldest commercial spaces. This project is not only focused on upgrading the facility but also on preserving its architectural identity and historical character, which are vital to the essence of Morocco's scientific capital.
Recently, the demolition phase of the market has been successfully completed, with a total of 137 commercial units having been dismantled under the supervision of local authorities from the Dar Dbibgh administrative office, in collaboration with various stakeholders. This operation was carried out smoothly without any major obstacles, reflecting the efficient planning and execution of the project.
Support for Local Merchants
In conjunction with the demolition, transitional solutions have been put in place for the affected merchants. Reports indicate that 81 traders have been allocated temporary shops situated near the market, ensuring that their businesses can continue operating while the reconstruction is underway. This approach highlights a commitment to supporting local commerce and minimizing disruption during the redevelopment process.
The overarching goal of this ambitious project is to rebuild the market according to modern safety and quality standards, while simultaneously maintaining its historical and architectural heritage. For decades, this market has been a prominent landmark on Mohammed V Street and a major destination for both residents and visitors of Fes.
The project is being executed by the Fes Development Company, with construction officially underway. Upon completion of the rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts, all merchants are expected to return to their original premises, revitalized and ready to cater to the community once more.
