Casablanca Initiates Restoration Studies for Historic Abattoirs
The city of Casablanca is embarking on a significant project aimed at the restoration and rehabilitation of the historic abattoirs located in Hay Mohammadi. This initiative marks a crucial step forward as the city has commenced the studies and project management oversight for the restoration work, which is projected to cost around 95 million Moroccan dirhams (MDH). With a focus on architectural preservation, the city has initiated the selection process for the engineering project management (MOEI), which will be responsible for conducting technical studies and overseeing the execution of restoration works. The estimated budget for this management mission is approximately 2 MDH. The project outlines comprehensive plans for restoring all structures within the former abattoirs' premises, ensuring that the facades and roofing are rehabilitated to their original state, while also reconfiguring the external fence. Furthermore, the works will include necessary demolitions and enhancements of the outdoor spaces, all while respecting the architectural identity of the site.
The future project manager will be tasked with overseeing the entire lifecycle of the restoration initiative, from diagnostic studies to the final acceptance of the completed work. This comprehensive mission encompasses preliminary and detailed project studies, preparation of consultation documents for businesses, assistance in contract awarding, execution studies, as well as ongoing oversight and management of the restoration activities. The entire project is expected to span a period of 24 months, reflecting the city's commitment to a thorough and meticulous restoration process.
Transforming the Abattoirs into a Cultural Hub
This new phase follows the recent approval by the Casablanca municipal council of the institutional and financial framework for the project, which was validated a few months ago. In May, council members ratified a partnership agreement allocating a total budget of 160 MDH to the project, which will be managed by SDL Casablanca Patrimoine. The overarching goal is to transform the former abattoirs into a significant cultural facility while preserving their heritage value. The project envisions hosting artist residencies, exhibition galleries, community spaces, and the future headquarters of the Casablanca-Settat Chamber of Crafts.
Constructed in 1922 by architect Georges-Louis Lebon and shut down in 2002, the site of the old abattoirs is recognized as a key component of Casablanca's industrial heritage. Following years of cultural occupation and various projects, this restoration represents a pivotal moment in the city's strategy to rejuvenate its historical wastelands.
