Revitalizing Public Spaces: Fes Launches Program to Activate Bab Abi Jnoun

Revitalizing Public Spaces in Fes

In an ambitious move aimed at rejuvenating public spaces and enhancing the cultural and tourist appeal of the city, the Fes municipality, in collaboration with the Fes Saïs Association and under the supervision of the Fes-Meknes region, has announced the launch of a comprehensive program to activate the Bab Abi Jnoun square, one of the most prominent historical landmarks in the scientific capital of Morocco.

The inaugural events of this program are set to commence on Thursday, March 26, 2026, starting at 5 PM. The square will transform into an open space hosting a diverse array of artistic and entertainment offerings, including storytelling sessions, theatrical performances, acrobatic games, and circus acts. The initiative aims to create a festive atmosphere catering to various age groups among both residents and visitors of the city.

According to the organizing bodies, these activities will be held regularly every weekend, specifically on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, ensuring a continuous cultural activation of public spaces and cementing Fes's status as a distinguished cultural and tourist destination both nationally and internationally.

Artist Mohamed Al-Alami praised this initiative, viewing it as a positive step towards invigorating cultural life and adding artistic dynamism to a space that is symbolic of the city. However, he expressed concern regarding the approach taken, which he perceives as "limited to a narrow coordinating framework" that does not reflect the diversity and richness of Fes's cultural and artistic fabric.

Al-Alami highlighted the wealth of artists and cultural actors in the city, many of whom operate under constrained conditions due to the lack of regular support from the Fes Municipal Council for cultural associations and artistic events since 2018, despite the existence of significant cultural festivals and projects.

He emphasized that the real challenge extends beyond organizing temporary shows, advocating for the establishment of a fair cultural policy that promotes equal opportunities and openness to various local talents, alongside providing clear programs that ensure regular employment opportunities for artists, particularly in theater and music.

Al-Alami concluded his remarks by expressing hope that this initiative could mark the beginning of a broader journey, one that expands collaborative partnerships and involves various cultural stakeholders, thereby restoring the role of associations and artistic groups that have contributed to the cultural vibrancy of Fes for many years.
